How to Choose the Right Door Style For Your Home

Many people think about doors in strictly utilitarian terms. Sure, doors keep us safe and provide privacy, but they can also transform the look, feel, and flow of your home. If you’re overwhelmed by the endless choices, here’s how to choose house door styles that fit your budget and aesthetic.

House Door Styles: Essential Considerations

An oak door with ornate paneled glass might give you a stunning focal point, but would it meld with the exterior of a rustic cabin? Probably not. To choose the right house door style, you must consider a variety of factors, including:

Functionality

Functionality should always be the starting point. Main entrance doors need to balance security with curb appeal. On the other hand, interior doors should provide sufficient sound-dampening and style while accommodating traffic flow. As you shop styles of doors for houses, consider:

  • The space: Tired of working around doors to open the fridge or cabinets? A pocket door can eliminate awkward flow and give you more space.
  • Door swing: Do your doors swing in or out? This could impact furniture placement, traffic flow, and the door style.
  • Traffic: While French doors look elegant, they might not be ideal for a high-traffic hallway. Instead, we’d recommend a single door that can stand up to heavy use.

Finish

When browsing different door styles for houses, consider door placement and the color of your trim and flooring. High-traffic areas need scuff-resistant finishes like polyurethane. Conversely, lighter colors work best in low-traffic areas. For exterior-style doors for houses, look for weather-resistant finishes like marine-grade varnish and sturdy exterior paint.

Material

Every material has benefits and limitations.

  • Solid wood replacement doors insulate well and continue to defy passing trends. However, they require more upkeep and cost more.
  • Steel provides more security and less maintenance but can dent.
  • Hollow core doors are an affordable house interior door style but offer less soundproofing than solid or composite doors.

Different Door Styles in Houses

Traditional Panel Doors

These house door styles are typically made with raised or recessed panels. The panels are often arranged in different patterns to create more visual interest. These doors are best suited for formal spaces and bedrooms.

Modern Flush Doors

Flush doors have a flat surface (typically made of plywood or MDF) and either solid or hollow-core interiors. Unlike panel doors, they do not have raised or recessed sections. Generally, these house interior door styles are best suited for bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets.

French Doors

French doors typically come in pairs, with matching glass panels that meet in the middle and open outward from either side. These house interior door styles improve lighting while offering the flexibility to keep rooms open or private as needed.

Sliding Doors

This style of doors for houses slides horizontally instead of swinging open. They are popular because they do not require swing clearance and come in a variety of styles.

Pocket Doors

Pocked doors are ideal for homeowners with limited space. These house door styles slide into wall cavities, eliminating the need for swing clearance. You’ll generally find pocket doors in bathrooms and small areas where maximizing floor space is essential.

Barn Doors

Similar to sliding doors, barn-style doors for houses sit on a mounted track system and open horizontally. They’re statement pieces, sure, but they also save floor space and can improve flow—particularly when traditional swing doors are impractical.
